Pigment vs Anaplan (2026)

The challenger and the incumbent in enterprise planning. A $40,609 gap at the median, an engine decision you can't undo, and very different approaches to letting outside AI in.

2. Price: same floor, very different ceiling

Vendr puts Pigment's median at $74,000 a year across 117 purchases and Anaplan's at $114,609 across 67 [1][2]. Both show about 10% average savings off the first quote. The interesting part is the range. The floors are nearly identical — $33,640 for Pigment, $30,590 for Anaplan — so a small, single-use-case Anaplan deal can cost the same as Pigment. The ceilings aren't: Anaplan tops out at $301,931, about 1.8x Pigment's $168,100.

Read: Anaplan's premium shows up as scope grows. If your roadmap includes supply chain, sales or workforce planning on the same platform, price the year-three footprint, not the phase-one deal.

3. The engine decision you can't undo

Anaplan runs two calculation engines, and its documentation is explicit about the trade-offs [3][4][5]:

  • Classic is built for dense data, where most cells are populated. Polaris is built for sparse data, with "greater potential size, dimensionality, and granularity" [3].
  • A workspace is one or the other. It can't hold both kinds of model and can't be converted after it's provisioned [3][5].
  • Polaris is a subscription item. "If your subscription includes Polaris, you can request that a Polaris workspace is provisioned" [5].
  • The breakeven is about 33% density. Classic uses 8 bytes for every cell, populated or not. Polaris uses 24 bytes per populated numeric cell. Above roughly 33% populated, Classic is more memory-efficient. Below it, Polaris is [4].
  • Polaris has limits Classic doesn't: up to 15,000 line items and 100 versions per model, 2,000-character formulas, and no Optimizer or brought-forward [6].

Pigment markets a single engine and says its workspaces "are not limited in storage capacity," and contrasts that with a 720GB limit on Anaplan's Classic engine [7]. That's a vendor's claim about a competitor. Test it with your own model.

For FP&A buyers. Check your density before the demo: a model planned by product × customer × region × channel × month will have far more empty intersections than a P&L by department. Ask both vendors to load your largest real model, not a sample, and ask Anaplan which engine they'd put it on and why.

4. Letting outside AI in

Both vendors now give Claude and Copilot governed access, but the posture differs.

Pigment's MCP server is read-only by default. Each user can switch on "advanced mode" to add modeling and write tools — create metrics, write formulas, input data — still bounded by Pigment permissions [8]. Pigment documents setup for Claude, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot Studio [9].

Anaplan's AI Gateway connects "Claude, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot" over MCP, with "initial access" that is read-only, timestamped logging of tool calls, and built-in throttling [10]. The page doesn't name ChatGPT, state GA status or give pricing [10].

If you want an assistant to draft a variance commentary, both work on paper. If you want it to update a forecast, only Pigment documents a write path today. See the connector tracker for current status.

5. Analyst positioning

In the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Financial Planning Software, Anaplan says it was named a Leader for the ninth time [11] and Pigment says it was named a Visionary [12]. Selection committees often weigh that. It tells you about vendor scale and execution, not whether either fits your model.

6. How to choose

  • Lean Anaplan if you're planning across several functions at enterprise scale, have (or will fund) certified model builders, and the year-three scope justifies a higher ceiling.
  • Lean Pigment if the finance team needs to change the model itself, you want a documented AI write path, and you're pricing closer to the $74,000 median.
  • Either way: get both quotes. Each vendor is the other's best negotiating lever.

FAQ

Is Pigment cheaper than Anaplan?

At the median, yes: Vendr reports $74,000 per year for Pigment (117 purchases) versus $114,609 for Anaplan (67 purchases). The floors are similar ($33,640 vs $30,590), but Anaplan's ceiling ($301,931) is about 1.8x Pigment's ($168,100).

What is the difference between Anaplan Classic and Polaris?

Per Anaplan's documentation, Classic is built for dense data and Polaris for sparse data with greater dimensionality. A workspace is one or the other and cannot be converted, and Polaris is available only if your subscription includes it.

Which connects better to ChatGPT and Claude?

Pigment documents setup for Claude, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot Studio, read-only by default with optional per-user write tools. Anaplan's AI Gateway names Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, read-only initially, and does not name ChatGPT or state GA status or pricing.

Which is the Gartner Leader?

In the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Financial Planning Software, Anaplan was named a Leader for the ninth time and Pigment a Visionary, per each vendor's announcement.
