Claude for finance teams (2026)

What Claude can actually do for an FP&A team today: the Excel add-in, the finance-system connectors, what's read-only, and the governance caveats your controller will ask about.

1. Claude for Excel

Anthropic's add-in is generally available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise [1]. For FP&A, the useful parts are:

  • Explaining models: trace how a number is calculated, with clickable cell-level citations.
  • Flexing assumptions safely: change a driver while keeping formula relationships intact.
  • Debugging: find the root cause of #REF! and #DIV/0! errors.
  • Building from templates: populate an existing template or draft a new model.
Know the limits [1]. No macros/VBA or data tables. Not recommended for audit-critical calculations without verification. Anthropic warns that external files can carry prompt injections. Add-in activity is not in Enterprise audit logs (Compliance API coverage is in public beta), and the add-in doesn't inherit custom retention settings.

3. Where it's genuinely useful for FP&A

  • Variance commentary: a read-only planning connector (Datarails, Vena, Pigment) plus Claude is enough to draft budget-vs-actual narrative from governed numbers.
  • Model review: Claude for Excel on an inherited forecast — "walk me through how revenue in C42 is built."
  • Ad-hoc ERP questions: NetSuite's connector runs saved searches and reports under the user's role [7].
  • Warehouse Q&A: Snowflake and Databricks expose governed semantic layers so answers use defined metrics, not raw tables [10][11].

4. Rollout checklist

  1. Start read-only. Turn on write tools (Cube, Pigment, NetSuite, QuickBooks) only for named users.
  2. Use non-admin roles for connector sign-in (NetSuite requires it [7]).
  3. Confirm connector cost per vendor — Datarails' docs call theirs a paid feature [2]; Cube bills per call in AI credits [3].
  4. Decide where audit evidence lives before month-end work touches AI.

FAQ

Is Claude for Excel included in Claude plans?

Yes. Anthropic says Claude for Excel is generally available to Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Usage counts against your normal Claude limits.

Can Claude write data back into our planning tool?

Usually not yet. Datarails, Vena and Anaplan connectors are read-only. Cube and Pigment allow write-back only behind explicit permissions. NetSuite and QuickBooks connectors can create and update records.

Is Claude for Excel safe for sensitive models?

Anthropic recommends it only for trusted spreadsheets, warns about prompt injection in external files, and notes that Excel add-in activity is not included in Enterprise audit logs (it is covered by the Compliance API in beta). Review with your security team first.
